Does Artex contain asbestos? What UK homeowners need to know

Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Artex Removal team

Short answer: Artex and similar textured coatings applied in the UK before 2000 may contain a small amount of chrysotile (white asbestos), most commonly in coatings from before the mid-1980s. You cannot tell by looking, so a sample should be lab tested before the coating is sanded, scraped or drilled. Undisturbed and in good condition, it is low risk, and skimming over it is a safe way to cover it.
Does Artex contain asbestos? What UK homeowners need to know

Why some Artex contains asbestos

Asbestos fibres were added to textured coatings to strengthen them. The amount was usually small, often under 5 percent, and it was mostly chrysotile. Manufacturers moved away from it during the 1980s and the UK banned all asbestos in 1999.

How to find out

  • Do not sand, scrape or drill the coating to check it
  • Get a small sample taken and analysed by an accredited lab
  • Results usually come back within a few working days
  • If the property was built after 2000, asbestos is very unlikely

Your options if it tests positive

  • Leave it alone and paint over it if you are happy with the texture
  • Skim over it to seal it in and get a smooth finish
  • Have it removed by trained operatives following HSE guidance

Skimming over is the most common choice because it seals the coating without disturbing it.

Your options if it tests negative

You can skim over it or have it fully removed, whichever suits the job. Full removal is usually only worth it if you need to get back to the original surface.
